Foundation values: These determine the school aims. The foundation values must include the permanent unchangeable key concepts that determine the planned and applied goals of the school. Without any foundation values that school will have a hit and miss management because there are no key concepts to work towards on a day by day basis.

To have a general idea what to put in the curriculum is not enough either because this is teaching practice without reason.  A school without a foundation policy document will follow any trend without questioning the correctness of where that will take you. A school must define its identity so clearly that the education objectives and methods to achieve these can be established.

To have no foundation values is to have no guidance chart to give direction to every other direction of the school management. Such schools are blind to any change that can bring benefits because it does not know where it was going in the first place. In this situation the school will be running on a chance, hit and miss basis and not understand why any thing succeeds or fails.

The foundation values are to be known to all who work in it and they should feel they can accept the sacrifices they have to make in following them. Personal beliefs may not be the school values so staff must sacrifice their preferred ideas to accommodate the school’s fundamental belief values. Further to build a school on a personal value base with out using the support of a sympathetic academic approach to meet the aims is a ship pulling itself in two directions at the same time.

Therefore a school whose aim is the whole education of the child cannot use a counter education theory to determine how it achieves that whole education objective. This is like sailing the same ship with a hole in the base keel below the water line. You can pump out the water coming in, but in the end it will sink.

To summaries foundation values determine what the school wants to achieve and must have a sympathetic structure and methods in practice to achieve the goals for the students. Foundation aims are then the target goals that keep all things on course.
